Group Dental Insurance Harman Stone

Group dental insurance is designed to pay a portion of the costs associated with dental care for employees and their families.  Group dental insurance began to become very popular in the early 1970's.  It is estimated that between 1970 and 1990, the percentage of employees with group dental insurance rose from 5% to 60%.  Now, it is estimated that 74% of U.S. employees are offered group dental insurance.

There are several different types of individual, family, or group dental insurance plans grouped into three primary categories:

  • Indemnity - an form of group dental insurance that does not use any type of managed care.  It allows you to see any dentist you want who will accept this type of coverage;
  • Preferred Provide Network dental plans (PPO) - which are the least restrictive form of managed care; and
  • Dental Health Managed Organizations (DHMO) - in which you are assigned, or select, an in-network dentist and/or in-network dental office and use the dental benefits for that network.

Dentists offices usually have a fee schedule, or list of prices for the dental procedures they offer.  Dental insurance companies have similar fee schedules which are generally based on the Usual, Customary and Reasonable (UCR) dental fees for that area.  The fee schedule is commonly used as the transactional instrument between the insurance company, dentist and the insured.
